Wisconsin DOT releases trailer safety bulletin

The Wisconsin Department of Transport yesterday released a safety warning urging that those who utilize trailers check their towing connections routinely to avoid the possibility of injury.

The announcement is in response to the April 20 death of a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay student who was struck and killed by a trailer that came loose from a pickup truck as it passed her on U.S. 41.

Had the trailer been attached following the safety precautions in this bulletin, the trailer-truck accident may have been avoided.

“For safe towing on roadways, state law requires that the ball-and-hitch coupling assembly must match exactly and fit securely,” Wisconsin State Patrol Lt. Nick Scorcio said in the release.

Scorcio also reminds drivers to make sure two chains of appropriate length are used as additional attachments between the trailer and vehicle.

The announcement reminds drivers that violations of these laws can result in fines and demerits on one’s driver’s license.
