State trooper killed by drunk driver

Police report that a Wisconsin State Trooper was killed around 8:38 p.m. Sunday in a two-vehicle crash while responding to a fellow officer’s request for help in making an arrest.

The accident occurred on Highway 47 in the westbound lanes. A witness to the crash told police that a pick up truck suddenly pulled in front of the troopers cruiser, entering the highway from a side road without its lights on. The trooper struck the car, dying instantly.

The 49-year-old driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital, where he was later charged with suspicion of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. Police who administered a breathalyzer test at the scene of the accident measured the man’s blood alcohol at double the legal limit.

The officer leaves behind a sister, both parents, and his wife of two years.
