Cyclist struck in hit-and-run

Posted on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 at 12:51 pm

According to Fon du Lac police, a 22-year-old woman was struck while riding her bicycle by a hit-and-run reckless driver this Wednesday.

The incident occurred as the cyclist was heading southbound on North Brooke Street around 4:45 p.m.

Police describe the suspect as being an older, heavy-set man, with a rusty blue car.

“We’re seeing a lot more people riding bikes,” said Deputy Chief Kevin Lemke. “It is healthier, and when gas prices go up and the economy is down, people ride bikes to save money. Whenever you have a lot of bikes and cars trying for the same real estate, there will be accidents. Unfortunately, the bicyclist is going to lose,” said Lemke.

Lemke said drivers should be cautious around cyclists, especially as summer begins.

A driver from Valders struck and killed a Manitowoc cyclist on Sunday. The accident occurred on Marken Road, northeast of Kiel. Both travelers were heading north.

According to police, the driver contacted them himself several hours after the collision to report that he thought he might have hit something on the road. Upon questioning by the police it became apparent that he was driving under the influence.

The driver was release on $3,000 bail Monday after being charged with the cyclist’s traffic death.
